When Reality Bites, it hurts

I have been 'training' for a month or so now.   This was to top up my base fitness.  I thought it was doing ok and I have seen, over the past 6 months, some encouraging results.  Just one was a trail climb with a regular crew where ion the past I would max out my heart rate at the top to about 172BPM.  Last Monday night I topped out the climb after chasing the guys up and checked the rate at the top..  154BPM.   That is pretty significant.

All this has been now tempered when I decided to join a Single Speed ride over at Bunyaville.  There were only 3 of us to start but after about 5 km I was being absolutely smashed.  I admit that I had not know or ridden with these guys before nor do I know anything about their riding.  It was just I feel I should not have been that far behind.  I was struggling.

I also accept that these guys would have been mid 30's and I hit 51 in a few weeks plus this is their regular ride area.  I haven't reallly ridden there for a few years, the surface is loose shale and gravel. 

I was pretty run down on Wednesday.  These are all the things Mrs HBR was busy reminding me about. 

All said and done I realised there is a huge gap between where I am and where I think I should be.

I have a goal.

There are plans afoot.  They may or may not come off.

I have a desire to go compete at the NZ Single Speed Championships to be held over the Anzac Day weekend in 2015.   For you heathens that's around the 25th April.

Being realistic there is little to nil in the chance of coming home with anything to show except an expensive credit card debt.  To be honest if one comes home with any rewards I suspect they have not understood the implied concept.

I am of the understanding that these are not really the most serious of events.  The race should be a 50km circuit of the magnificent pine forests in Rotorua, there are lots of long and steep fire roads to climb but an extraordinary amount of near perfect flowy single tracks to zip back down.

I am told there are some short-cuts available to be 'bought' to shorten your race however the price is to either; Drink a beer (stubbie) or if you don't drink then you can eat a weetbix (I suspect it will be dry).   the 'penalty' may be a slog of a climb or an extra trail.  Of course you may be being set up as well.

This is a video of one trail names 'Corners'  Depending on your skill level there are stories of this trail, since extended and tidied up, taking between 12 and 15 mins top to bottom.

This is not a Down Hill event, the one where they all wear those Ninja Turtle suits with armour and padding.  this is classed as Cross Country although watching that video I think I'd like some padding.

I have located flights and need a week off.  Flights should come in under $ 700 return.  It fears me that this might be the cheap part.

I have permission to go from the family but I need to build some 'credit' first.   The Boss believes the family should go over (again) just to suss out the trails and become reacquainted with the town sometime before April.  I wonder if late March counts.

I recently left my job and am currently seeking replacement employment. I am unsure how this will all work out just yet but I am getting some training in.

Brisbane Valley Rail Trail 2 Nov

Brisbane Valley Rail Trail.  33 km along a disused railway.

It really should be that easy, shouldn't it?


Did the trail from Moore to Blackbutt a couple of weekends ago. we got a little off track.
There are some easy route and advanced route options along the way. sometimes the signage at the other end could use some assistance. There are also pony trails with what look like BVRT markings on them. Perhaps they are one BVT images (no R).

The weekend we did the trail there were also some big laminated arrows plastered up, probably not taken down from some event weeks before.

In any case we were plodding along the track and found some single track off to the right.. BVRT Black diamond... cool we headed along that for a little difference. I came across a downed tree. felt aprehensive about continuing so turned around, the others had caught up and they wanted to push on. I thought it better to head back to the main trail.

We would have been close to where the trail goes under the highway and then goes on to Benarkin SOUTH of the highway. Our single track popped us out still north where we climbed a 10% grade for just over 1.5 km. We suspected something wrong but we were still seing signs and arrows.. we can't be wrong was the decision.

Not so soon, at the top, we were looking at a fire tower so we scooted down the fire road still heading north west. This led us onto a fire management break, again with my GPS I stopped and felt we were wrong. We popped out at a saw mill with an historic coach house display outside. This convinced my travelling conterparts we were on the right path, even though one of them had done the trail 2 years ago ( he can get lost in Daisy stil after 6 years riding there). We continued along that road with the guys convinced we were right and the path would soon veer a little left.

About 6 km along the road I stopped and made the others come back to me. With the GPS I showed them we needed to be about 9 km LEFT (or due south) of where we were to find Benarkin. They ummed and ahhed before saying we're right and we will veer soon.

3 km more and a rode was maked on the GPS that did not exist, then suddenly a pony trail thing darted off into the bush where the road should be. I called the others and we took off down that way. at least it was headed the right way-ish.

It popped out to another bush track and that turned into a road. 3 km on we turned left along another road and passed the golf club, North Blackbutt and then into blackbutt itself. 37 + km later.
long lunch etc and some punture repairs we continued.

On the ride to Yarraman there was another option, straight ahead was a black diamond ON the trail under the highway, to the right the 'easy' option. I wanted to stay on the know trail this time. they wanted the easy option.. this popped us up onto a road where they found trail signs. I rode with them for about 2 km then stopped and wailed that I didn't want to go that way.. it didn't feel 'right'.

We were heading due north and again were north of the highway when the trail should be on the southside of the highway. They said we were right and stop whinging.. so off we went down the 3 km dirt road where we were sitting on about 60kmh. At the bottom of the long descent we crossed a cattle grid and little kid on a bike called out asking us where we were going. I said "Yarraman, looking for the rail trail" He shook his head " wrong way, need to go back and ride along the road."
I wasn't the happiest of riding buddies. back up that hill... I choose NOW to tell you I was riding the singlespeed because it's more comfortable than our Dually.

We went back to the track divergence and took the train tracked black diamond section. not really technical just some gullies where they bridges are gone.

I think we added about 8 km out and back due North from the trail.

To top things off, the car drop off in the morning could not find the Yarraman station, so they parked outside the police station.. at the TOP of the hill in town.

Yarraman station is a good few km from the town itself. we reached the staion and they decided the town would be straight ahead, along that track up there.....

I stayed at the information awning looking at the map there showing they were off on a 5km walking loop trail. I read the board for hints as to where town was then consulted my GPS. hmmm gotta head westish I reckon.. about 4 km. When they saw I was not moving to join them they relented and came back.. showed them the map on GPS and they agreed had to head the other way..

No-one died, no one was injured too much, we all survived.

HOWEVER ! ! ! I had stashed some Heinikens in an esky to be in the collection vehicle for the end of the ride. when they dropped off the car and trailer, they decided to SWAP cars meaning the beer was now back at the START ! ! ! !. never twigged of it till lunchtime.

w 0 0 t ! ! 2 in 3 days !

I need to make a couple of little changes.

Firstly, over the New Year period I buggered up and advertised my Carbon XTC at a stupidly low price.  Naturally it sold in 15 minutes or so.

I will have to change the title image now as the SS is the current Mountain Bike.  The SS has been a little neglected of late, I have had a few virus things and not feeling wel enough to ride it.  As I have been riding the 17 km to Daisy hill before then riding with friends there it's been a better idea to ride Mrs HBR's dually on those days.   It's easier to smash the others when I have some gears to keep some energy in reserve.

My week off in January was to be shifting a few things then service my motorbike.  I bought a lot of things from the States last August which have been sitting in the bottom of my tool box and then I'd get out for a couple of rides.  This never managed to happen.  I spent the week shifting more and more stuff to storage and just wore myself out.  I realised the last time I was shifing this much stull I was 5 years younger, climbing and doing the off road tri-athelon series.  Gee, did I ever notice the difference.

I turned 50 in December, Lucas HBR turned 2 in December and Mrs HBR turned 40 early this month.  It's been an expensive few months I guess.


Late last year we agreed we should get organised and look at selling our Home.  It's lovely and really handy to things but as we are getting closer to slowing down it would make some good sense to sell here, reduce some debt and see if we can either build or buy another rental in the near future.

In the past couple of days we got around to putting our townhouse on the market.  I find the costs involved in selling bordering on obscene.  The plan will be to sell here and move over to Mrs HBR's house.  We spent lots of time packing up all kinds of stuff and putting it into a storage shed.  I did a lot during the first week of January with the plan that the second week the place would be on the market.  It was planned that we would be out before the sheds were being demolished.  Hmmm...   Well, by mid march, we had to shift from one side of the complex to the other and sign for another 3 months.  We were very fortunate to have some friends help the shift.

 The HBR's are taking next week off to head up to the Sunshine Coast for a break.

2 Posts a year.. not too bad.

Well another year passed, it's now April again.  This one is 2014.

I have managed to get out on the bicycles a lot more this year.  Actually since February it's been mostly every second Sunday at least.  Well, that is just a dirt ride for myself. 

The Boss, The Boy and I have managed a few rides together. We have bought the boy a 'Croozer' bike trailer.  It's really quite cool and he loves riding in it.

You can just see it there in the background attached to one of the bikes.  This is one of the times we have packed it up about 4.30 and headed to a park, about 5-6 km away, taken sausages and had dinner there then rode home. Summer is awesome.

Against the tree in the background is a 'balance bike' we got him for Christmas.  These are bikes without pedals and little kids just learn to ride and coast.  They learn to balance without using training wheels, well that's the plan anyway.

My own rides have been really quite enjoyable.  I have been riding from home to Daisy Hill Forest, doing a 20 km lap there then usually riding home.  It's about 17 km each way and takes just under an hour.  The 20 km lap with some friends has a good proportion of stopping and waiting or catching of breath so we usually ride for about 2 hours or so. 

I reckon 4 hours and 50 odd km isn't too bad for a Sunday morning.
